to pay taxes, we should not be using taxes to reward people who fail. we should be using them to reward people that want to work. everybody in this country should succeed, not just people in government. host: president obama gave an address yesterday talking about how congress should act to keep taxes low. let's take a listen. >> 97% of small-business owners will not see their taxes go up next year. this is something everybody says they agree on. it should have gotten done months ago. republicans in congress are standing in the way. there are holding tax cuts for 98% of americans hostage until they pass tax cuts for of the richest 2%. congress needs to step up and provide every responsible homeowner a chance to save $3,000 a year on mortgage at refinancing at lower rates. i give them a plan to do that in february. it is a plan that has the support of independent nonpartisan economists. republicans will not let it come to a vote. ask them how that helps homeowners. congress needs to step up and pass my plan to create a job corps to help our returning heroes find jobs as cops, firefighter

justify raising taxes on the middle class has been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify raising taxes with these tax cuts? >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been, quote, buried. we agree. that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states. of course the middle class has been buried. they're being buried by regulations. they're being buried by taxes. they're being buried by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> reporter: romney campaign put together a conference call to draw attention, more focus to the comments by the vice president. the obama campaign pushed back saying this was just another act of desperation and what the vice president was talking about were -- were situations or a climate that was put in place by the failed policies of the former administration. i'll tell you what, at the very next event during his remarkings, the vice president did touch on the same subject but left out the word buried. s

actually, it is a bit more than that. but we do not need is a tax increase that will cost us 700,000 jobs. two years ago, the president said you do not want to raise taxes in a bad economy. the economy was better than that it is now. ladies and gentleman, this is a big choice. it is not only about taxes. it is about freedom. it is about our principles. it is about our country. it is about the idea of our country. america is so much more than a country with a flag. it is an idea. these ideas make us who we are. they make us special. i will see something that in washington is considered out of date or wrong, and it is this -- america is an exceptional nation. we are not afraid to say so. people are you paying payroll taxes? that's a pretty good number. the unemployment comes from what we call the household survey, calling people up at home and saying do you have a job? are you working? are you unemployment and looking for a job or unemployed and not looking for a job. in that group it's a larger group because you have the self-employed. over the obama years, more and more people have left the labor force completely. especially older people between 50 and 56 that live off their savings and ira's before they should. some of those folks have returned in part-time work essentially in home-based businesses. about 110, 115,000 jobs are created in the establishment survey or the employer survey. but about 850 in the household survey, that would imply 700,000 or about 5% of american families have established a home-based business. it's completely implausible that that could happen. >> okay. so you say it's completely implausible and you are not the first economist to say this. and the only sample in terms of teeny fraction something like 55,000 people they call. is it possibl

over the country about bashes vouchers, the tax credit, but not just catholic schools, but other kinds of religious schools and proliferation of different schools and also charter schools have variation intensive public schools because charter schools are indeed public schools. but that element, i think, gives rise -- i think that's the overall trend that i should be kept on. there is another trend come you have that upward line. the money down the line of special concern to me into the church that i work for. and that is the decline of catholic schools in urban centers, basically as catholics moved more to suburbs. a trend going on for a long time. the massive structure earlier in the century as being, i do want to say abandoned, but deluded as catholics. those institutions have now, what are they call it, for 20 years or so have been hanging in the in order to serve the broader community, not just the catholic students. that is becoming economically more and more difficult and i think parental choice in education is one of the things that can help arrest the trend. see that again thi
